5 MAMA-FRIENDLY SNACKS TO KEEP YOU FUELLED & SATISFIED

Simple, balanced snack ideas for busy mamas who want to feel good, move well and have enough energy for everything motherhood brings.

Let’s be honest: eating well as a mama doesn't always look like beautifully prepared meals eaten sitting down at a table.

Sometimes it looks like eating with one hand while holding a baby with the other.

Sometimes it’s a snack in the car between activities.

And sometimes you realize at 3:00pm that the last thing you ate was breakfast.

We get it.

At FitMama Strong, we’re big believers that taking care of yourself doesn’t need to be complicated. Food is one of the ways we support our energy, our movement and our overall well-being—and having a few easy snack options on hand can make a big difference.

What makes a balanced snack?

When we're putting together a snack, we like to think about including a combination of:

Protein – helps make a snack more satisfying and supports muscle repair and recovery.

Healthy fats – add flavour and staying power while providing important nutrients.

Fibre – supports digestive health and can help you feel satisfied.

Carbohydrates – provide a readily available source of energy, particularly helpful when you're active and busy.

You don't need to measure, weigh or perfectly balance every snack. Think of these as building blocks, not rules.

Here are five of Jen's favourite combinations.

1. GREEK YOGURT + FRUIT + NUT BUTTER

This one is about as easy as it gets—and it's a great option when you want something filling without much preparation.

Start with:

  • Plain or vanilla Greek yogurt

  • Your favourite fruit—berries, banana, apple or whatever you have on hand

  • A spoonful of peanut, almond or other nut butter

  • Optional: a sprinkle of granola for extra crunch and carbohydrates

Why we love it: Greek yogurt provides protein, while fruit and granola bring carbohydrates and fibre. Nut butter adds healthy fats and makes the snack extra satisfying.

Mama shortcut: Keep individual yogurt containers and frozen fruit on hand so there's always a quick option available.

2. HOMEMADE NUT BUTTER BALLS

These are one of those snacks that are worth making ahead because they can live in your fridge and be grabbed whenever you need them.

A simple combination might include:

  • Oatmeal

  • Nut or seed butter

  • Nuts and/or seeds

  • Optional additions such as shredded coconut, dried fruit or a few chocolate chips

Want an easy recipe? Try these Sunny Energy Bites from UnlockFood.ca, a Canadian nutrition resource. They combine oats, ground flax, nut or seed butter and dried fruit for a simple, portable snack.

You can also make them your own with whatever you have in the cupboard. No chia seeds? No problem. Prefer sunflower seed butter? Go for it.

Why we love them: Oats provide carbohydrates and fibre, while nuts, seeds and nut butter provide protein and healthy fats.

They're also wonderfully portable—which matters when your snack needs to make it into a diaper bag, gym bag or car.

3. VEGGIES + HUMMUS

Sometimes a snack needs to be savoury.

Try pairing hummus with whatever vegetables you have available:

  • Carrots

  • Cucumber

  • Bell peppers

  • Snap peas

  • Broccoli

  • Cherry tomatoes

You can also add whole-grain crackers or pita if you want a more substantial snack.

Why we love it: Hummus provides protein and healthy fats, while vegetables contribute fibre and carbohydrates. Adding crackers or pita can provide additional carbohydrates when you need more fuel.

Mama shortcut: Buy pre-cut vegetables when time is tight. Convenience isn't cheating—it's a tool.

4. THE POWER SMOOTHIE

Smoothies are one of our favourite ways to get several nutritious ingredients together quickly—and they're particularly handy when sitting down for a meal feels impossible.

Jen's go-to combination starts with:

  • Banana

  • Oat milk

  • Vanilla Schnooza protein powder

  • Frozen pineapple

You can also add other fruit depending on what you have available.

Why we love it: Banana and fruit provide carbohydrates and fibre, while protein powder contributes protein. Oat milk adds carbohydrates and can provide additional nutrients depending on the product you choose.

Want to make it more substantial? Add a spoonful of nut butter or some ground seeds for healthy fats.

Smoothie tip: Frozen fruit makes smoothies thick and cold without needing to add ice. Keep a few bags in the freezer for an easy grab-and-blend snack.

5. COTTAGE CHEESE + FRUIT

Don't overlook cottage cheese!

It makes a quick, protein-rich base for either a sweet or savoury snack.

For a sweet version, try:

Cottage cheese + berries + banana + a little nut butter

Or keep it simple with:

Cottage cheese + sliced peaches or pineapple

For a savoury option, try:

Cottage cheese + cucumber + tomatoes + whole-grain crackers

Why we love it: Cottage cheese provides protein, while fruit or whole-grain crackers can provide carbohydrates and fibre. Add nuts or nut butter for some healthy fats.

It's a great example of how you don't need a complicated recipe to put together a balanced snack.

THE BIGGER PICTURE

One of the things we love about these snacks is that none of them require perfection.

You don't need to hit a precise ratio of protein, fat, fibre and carbohydrates every time you eat.

Instead, think about creating meals and snacks that include a variety of foods and help you feel energized, satisfied and ready for whatever comes next.

And remember: your nutritional needs can change depending on your individual circumstances, activity level, stage of life and health history. These ideas are intended as general food and snack suggestions—not individualized nutrition advice.

If you have specific nutrition goals, dietary restrictions, allergies or medical considerations, a registered dietitian or other qualified healthcare professional can help you determine what is appropriate for you.

For the rest of us?

Keep it simple. Keep some easy options within reach. And don't wait until you're completely starving to remember that you need to eat.

Because taking care of yourself doesn't have to mean adding another complicated task to your already-full mama to-do list.

Sometimes, it can be as simple as grabbing the yogurt, adding some berries and peanut butter, and getting on with your day.

That's mama-friendly nutrition we can get behind.
